All About Rat Terriers! 🐾
Size: 10–25 lbs. Rat Terriers come in both miniature and standard sizes, making them great for a variety of lifestyles, from apartments to active homes with yards!
Shedding: Low to moderate. Not hypoallergenic, but their short coats are easy to maintain with minimal grooming.
Barking: Moderate to high. Alert and vocal when needed. Rat Terriers make excellent watchdogs and will definitely let you know if something’s up!
Experience Level: Suitable for first-time owners if they’re ready for an energetic, intelligent dog that needs engagement and consistency.
Children: Great with respectful children. Their playful and energetic nature makes them fun companions, but supervision is recommended with younger kids.
Apartment Living: Possible, but only with enough exercise. Rat Terriers have lots of energy and need daily physical and mental stimulation to stay happy.
Other Pets: Can get along well with other dogs, especially if raised together. However, due to their strong prey drive, caution is needed around small animals like hamsters or birds.
Training: Moderate to easy. Very intelligent and eager to learn but can be a little stubborn. They thrive with positive reinforcement and variety to keep things interesting!
Fun Facts!
Rat Terriers were originally bred as farm dogs to hunt rats and other small pests, making them fast, agile, and incredibly focused hunters.
They were once one of the most popular farm dogs in America and were even favored by Theodore Roosevelt, who is often credited with naming the breed.
Rat Terriers are known for their impressive jumping ability—they can leap surprisingly high compared to their size!
They are natural problem-solvers and can get into (and out of!) tricky situations, so secure fencing and mental stimulation are a must.
Despite their working-dog roots, Rat Terriers are also affectionate cuddle bugs who love to relax with their humans after a good play session.
