SHIH-TZU P14922 – LAKELAND
Hi! I’m a Shih Tzu!
I am a boy! 💙
My birthday February 12th, 2026! 🧁
All About Shih Tzu’s!
Size: 9–16 lbs. Shih Tzus are tiny royalty with flowing locks, sweet smooshy faces, and a confident little strut that says “I run this house.”
Shedding: Low to moderate! Their long, luxurious coat sheds less than you’d expect, but regular brushing and grooming keep them tangle-free and fabulous.
Barking: Low. Shih Tzus are generally quiet companions. They may alert you to visitors, but they’re much more into cuddling than making noise.
Experience Level: Excellent for first-time owners! Easygoing, affectionate, and adaptable, Shih Tzus are perfect for new dog parents and seasoned snugglers alike.
Children: Great with children. Gentle and playful, they do well with kids who know how to handle small dogs with care.
Apartment Living: Perfectly suited, they were born for cozy living! Shih Tzus thrive in apartments and are happiest lounging, playing, and supervising from the couch.
Other Pets: Very friendly! They usually get along well with other dogs and household pets and enjoy having furry friends around.
Training: Easy to moderate. Smart but a little independent. Positive reinforcement, patience, and treats make training a breeze (they love praise and snacks).
Fun Facts!
- Shih Tzus are often called “Chrysanthemum-faced dogs” because of the way their hair grows. Unlike most dogs, the hair on a Shih Tzu’s face grows in every direction—including straight up from the bridge of the nose. This creates a “floral” explosion of fur that usually requires a ponytail (topknot) just so they can see their dinner bowl.
- For centuries, Shih Tzus were the exclusive property of Chinese royalty. They lived in palaces and were highly prized by the Ming and Qing dynasties. It’s rumored that the emperors used these little dogs as living foot warmers at the foot of their beds. Because they were considered sacred, they were rarely seen outside the palace walls until the 1930s
- Have you ever noticed a Shih Tzu’s walk? They have a very distinct arrogant carriage. Because their hind legs are slightly longer than their front legs, and they carry their plumed tail curled high over their back, they have a “swing” to their step that looks like they’re strutting down a runway at Paris Fashion Week.
- Many Shih Tzus have a small white spot on their forehead, often called the “Star of Buddha.” According to legend, a Shih Tzu was traveling with Buddha when a thief tried to attack him. The tiny dog transformed into a giant lion to protect him. When Buddha turned the dog back into its small form, he kissed its forehead in gratitude, leaving a permanent white mark.
