All About Basset Hounds! πΎ
- Size: 40β65 lbs (They are short, but surprisingly heavy and muscular!)
- Shedding: Moderate to Heavy. Don’t let that short coat fool you; Basset Hounds shed consistently year-round and require regular brushing to keep the loose hair at bay.
- Barking: Medium to High, known for their deep, musical “baying” or howling. While they are generally laid-back, they will definitely let you know if someone is at the door or if they track an interesting scent.
- Experience Level: Great for patient owners. While incredibly loving, their independent and stubborn streak means they aren’t always the easiest for absolute beginners who want instant obedience.
- Children: Excellent, incredibly patient, gentle, and tolerant, making them fantastic family companions.
- Apartment Living: Surprisingly well-suited! Despite their size, they are ultimate couch potatoes. They need a few daily walks to stay healthy, but otherwise, they are perfectly content sleeping the day away on the sofa.
- Other Pets: Excellent,Β originally bred to hunt in packs, they naturally get along wonderfully with other dogs and generally coexist peacefully with cats.
- Training: Medium/Challenging, highly independent. They are smart, but they are motivated by their noses and food, not necessarily by a desire to please you. Training requires lots of treats and patience!
Fun Facts!
- Olympic-Level Sniffers: A Basset Houndβs sense of smell is second only to the Bloodhound. Their long, floppy ears actually serve a purpose: they sweep along the ground to track and funnel scents directly to their nose!
- The “Sad Look” is an Illusion: Their famous droopy eyes and wrinkled skin aren’t just for looking adorable- the loose skin helps trap and hold scent particles close to their face while they are tracking.
- A French Classic: The name “Basset” comes from the French word bas, which literally means “low” or “dwarf.” They were originally bred by French aristocrats to hunt small game on foot.
- Hollywood Royalty: Basset Hounds are pop culture icons! A Basset Hound named “Dog” was the famous companion to Lt. Columbo in the hit TV show Columbo, and Clint Eastwood famously shared the screen with one in the movie Every Which Way But Loose.
