All About Chow Chows!
Size: 45-70 lbs. Chow Chows are medium to large, sturdy dogs. They are best suited for owners who understand independent breeds and have a more predictable, structured lifestyle.
Shedding: High. Chow Chows have very thick double coats (either rough or smooth) that require regular brushing. They shed heavily, especially during seasonal shedding periods, and are not considered hypoallergenic.
Barking: Low to Medium. Chow Chows are generally quiet dogs that rarely bark without a reason. They are loyal, deeply devoted to their family, and naturally suspicious of strangers, making them excellent, watchful guardians.
Experience Level: Best for experienced owners. Their independent and strong-willed nature requires a confident owner who understands primitive dog behaviors.
Children: Best with older children or adults. Due to their dignified and sometimes aloof nature, they typically prefer a calm environment and do not tolerate rough handling or chaotic play well.
Apartment Living: Would be better suited for a private home.
Other Pets: Can be selective. They possess a strong prey drive and a dominant streak, meaning they do best as the only pet or paired carefully with large dog of the opposite sex through early socialization.
Training: Moderate to Challenging. Chow Chows are highly intelligent but incredibly independent, often described as having a cat-like personality. They do not live to please their owners like a Golden Retriever might; instead, they respond best to firm, consistent, and respectful positive reinforcement. Professional training is recommended.
Fun Facts!
- The Blue-Black Tongue: The Chow Chow is famous for its unique blue-black tongue. They are born with pink tongues, which naturally darken to a deep purple-black by the time they are about six months old. Shar-Peis are the only other breed to share this trait!
- An Ancient History: They are one of the world’s oldest recognizable dog breeds, originating in northern China thousands of years ago where they served as temple guardians, hunting companions, and royal protectors.
- The “Lion” Mane: Their distinctive look includes a thick ruff of fur around their head and shoulders, giving them the appearance of a small lion. In fact, one of their traditional Chinese names is Songshi Quan, which translates to “puffy-lion dog.”
- Cat-Like Cleanliness: Chow Chows are notoriously clean and fastidious animals. They often groom themselves much like a cat and are widely considered one of the easiest dog breeds to housebreak because they dislike being dirty.
- Unique Straight Stifles: Unlike most dogs, Chow Chows have almost completely straight hind legs. This structural trait gives them a very distinct, stiff-legged, and stately gait when they walk.
