All About Yorkies! 🐾

Size: 4-7 lbs. Yorkies are true “toy” dogs. They are petite, elegant, and perfectly sized for travel, though they are much sturdier and braver than their tiny frame suggests.

Shedding: Yorkies have hair that is very similar to human hair rather than fur. They are considered hypoallergenic and hardly shed at all, though they do require daily brushing to prevent tangles.

Barking: High. Yorkies are legendary “alarm” dogs. They are extremely alert and possess a sharp, piercing bark. They take their job as the household security system very seriously- whether it’s a delivery person or a blowing leaf.

Experience Level: Suitable for beginners. They are adaptable and bond closely with their owners. However, because they are so small and cute, owners must be careful not to let “Small Dog Syndrome” kick in; they still need boundaries!

Children: Better for older children. Because of their tiny size, they do best in homes with older children who know how to handle a small dog gently.

Apartment Living: Excellent. Yorkies are the kings and queens of apartment living. While they are energetic, they can get a lot of their exercise just by running around a living room. As long as you manage their barking, they are perfect roomates.

Other Pets: Generally good. They usually get along well with other dogs, though they often forget they are small and may try to “boss around” much larger dogs. Caution is needed with very large, high-prey-drive pets.

Training: Moderately challenging. Yorkies are very bright but can be a bit independent, a polite way of saying “stubborn”! They respond best to positive reinforcement and treats. Note: Housebreaking can take a bit longer with this breed than others.

Fun Facts about Yorkshire Terrier’s!

• A 4-pound Yorkie named Smoky is credited as the first “therapy dog.” Found in a foxhole in New Guinea, she went on to fly on 12 combat missions and ran a telegraph wire through a 70-foot long, 8-inch wide pipe to help build an airbase, saving dozens of soldiers from dangerous manual labor.
• Yorkie’s are real shape-shifters. They aren’t born with those famous blue-and-tan coats. All Yorkie puppies are born black and tan. As they grow, their coat color gradually lightens and shifts into the shimmering steel blue and gold adult colors over the first two to three years of their life.
• The Yorkshire Terrier was one of the very first breeds to be registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) back in 1885. They have been a top-tier favorite in the U.S. for over a century, consistently ranking in the top most popular breeds.
